Smetana’s sonata is one of the few original romantic works for this combination. New Zealander Paul Sarcic and Pole Marek Pasieczny experiment with complex rhythmic patterns, utilize all the keys of the piano as well as timbres created by the performers inside the instrument.

The Russian Rosenblatt and the American Wilberg are inspired by well-known Japanese melodies (‘Red Dragonfly’, ‘Song of the Seashore’ and ‘Sakura’) and by the opera Carmen respectively and create compositions-‘fantasies’ full of humor, theatricality, skill and contrasts . Rachmaninov’s 1st Suite, dedicated to Tchaikovsky, which the composer was inspired by four Russian poems, is also a fantasy.
