Under the general title “SYMBOLS II: Memory” the architecture and contemporary art exhibitions “SYMBOLS” and “Athens, 200 years 200 buildings” are presented in the city of Chania, in a collaboration between the cultural organization CityLab and the Municipality’s Culture and Environment Public Enterprise Chania (K.E.P.PE.DIH.) and the Mediterranean Architecture Center (KAM) and the support of the University of Western Attica.

The exhibition will last from May 20 to June 15, 2023 and will be developed simultaneously in 5 historical landmarks of the Old Town of Chania: the KAM, the Giali Mosque, the Sabbionara Gate, the chapel of Agios Roccos and the Hammam on Katre Street .

The experiential experience of browsing the entire scattered exhibition, the potential labyrinthine routes that connect the distinct spaces that host it, recall the archetypal form of the mythical labyrinth, where an abstract version of it is also the logo of the present exhibition.

“SYMBOLS II: Memory” expects to work in multiple ways.

A first important goal is to bridge, in the sense of the symbol, works from different sources of creation, so that architecture, sculpture, painting and music coexist semantically, reconstruct the characteristics of their Renaissance identity and artists cease to defend the limits of the arts.

A second goal is to give young creators the opportunity and power to converse in front of the general public with their accomplished teachers.

Finally, the “SYMBOLS” exhibition itself was and continues to be a springboard for the creation of artistic works, since it not only presents selected works based on the theme, but also those created for the very theme of the symbol as well as for participating in the dialectic which the report forms.

All of the above is summed up in our intention to problematize the creators and recipients, to declare that art is not a process, because it undertakes to say what cannot be said otherwise, and in conclusion to put again, with different formulations the same eternal question: “What is art?”, which we once thought Leo Tolstoy had answered forever…
